Abraham Cherem's Parque Chapultepec II is more than just an office building. It's a testament to the changing face of Naucalpan's industrial zone, an area transitioning from factories to commercial centers, offices, and even residential and cultural hubs. This design, which won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018, embodies the essence of this transformation.
The design's inspiration stems from the concept of free space. Cherem envisioned a structure that offers total freedom to the offices within, a feature achieved through the strategic placement of black steel staples that support the mezzanine floors. This efficient structural solution provides flexibility for a variety of office space layouts, catering to the diverse needs of modern businesses.
What sets Parque Chapultepec II apart is its functional and structural coherence, a characteristic that resonates with the industrial typology of the area. The structure rises from the basement, creating facades on each side, and the supports are barely separated in the longitudinal facades, generating an urban scale porch. This design approach not only enhances the building's aesthetic appeal but also contributes to its efficiency.
The building's realization technology is another aspect worth noting. The structural system comprises black steel staples supporting mezzanine floors made from grid slabs. The short facades separations respond not to a module but to visuals and orientation. The choice of materials - concrete, steel, and glass - reflects the industrial heritage of the area while also catering to the needs of an office building.
The design also incorporates a central void, linking all levels and providing natural lighting. This feature also facilitates different forms of social interaction and habitability, adding another layer of functionality to the building. Despite its seemingly simple design, the Parque Chapultepec II offers a high degree of flexibility, catering to a variety of office space layouts.
In conclusion, Abraham Cherem's Parque Chapultepec II is a shining example of how design can reflect and contribute to the transformation of an area. It's a design that merges functionality and aesthetic appeal, embodying the spirit of innovation and transformation that is sweeping through Naucalpan's industrial zone.
